STRATUS Learns and Shares at IMSH 2023

The STRATUS team had a great experience at the International Meeting on Simulation in Healthcare (IMSH) 2023. STRATUS was represented by Dr. Andrew Eyre (Medical Director), Dr. Deb Navedo (Director of Education), Maggie Ryan (Assistant Director of Education), Dr. Mahdi Ebnali (Research Scientist), Eric Nohelty (Simulation Specialist), and our two international fellows, Drs Afaf Alblooshi and Faten AlRadini. Other colleagues from Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) attended as well.

Mahdi Ebnali presented a poster at IMSH 2023, co-authored with Sandra Park and Roger Dias.

IMSH, organized by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH), brings together people who work in or are aspiring to work in healthcare simulation to explore new innovations and best practices. The STRATUS team was pleased to share our advances in research and education. Dr. Eyre and Dr. Jamie Robertson (Surgical Educator at BWH Department of Surgery) taught an interactive workshop on how high-fidelity simulation can be used for procedural training and assessment. Dr. Ebnali gave a poster presentation on the research lab’s work with NASA/TRISH. Additionally, Drs Matt DiFrancesco (STRATUS Assistant Director for Medicine) and Eliza Cricco-Lizza (BWH internal Medicine Resident) also gave podium presentations.

The STRATUS team connected with fellow simulation experts and learned what others are doing to advance simulation education. Maggie Ryan noted the passion on display in the sessions and exhibit hall, and Dr. Navedo appreciated being back in person after two years of largely remote activities, which was especially challenging for simulation education. Dr. Eyre was excited to see the current and future possibilities in medical simulation in the exhibit hall.

I think in general the best thing about IMSH is the passion you can feel about simulation and it’s invaluable role in health professions education. The conference really invigorates me to come back to STRATUS and continue to improve and create high quality, innovative programs for our center.

Dr. Alblooshi, our current fellow from the United Arab Emirates, found the experience to be especially valuable in creating connections and seeing the variety of technologies from around the world. “IMSH 2023 was a great experience for me as a fellow at STRATUS to build a bigger picture about the future of simulation and where can I add to it as a medical educator,” Dr. Alblooshi said.

STRATUS looks forward to future simulation conferences, both for learning from other simulation centers and sharing the advances we have made in education and research.
